Good books to read in 2009

Are you looking for a good book to read? In 2009 LCOC is focusing on reading the bible (cover to cover), but let’s not forget some other good books that can give us encouragement and help with our Christian walk with God.

 * On the subject of Baptism, its scriptural subject, mode, and purpose
you should acquire and read A Handbook on Baptism by J. W. Shepherd.
No other book on baptism equals this one.

* On the subject of Instrumental Music in Worship you must read M. C.
Kurfees excellent volume, Instrumental Music in Worship. This book is
a collection of quotes from the great scholars of the religious world,
all of which sustain our position. The Hardeman-Boswell Debate on
Instrumental Music will help you see the best the other side has to
offer and an excellent refutation of it. James Bales’, Instrumental
Music and New Testament Worship
is excellent.

* On the Church, the following books will provide you with a good
array of material. Introducing the Church of Christ, edited by John
Waddey, The Church of Christ by T. W. Phillips; Why I Am a Member of
the Church of Christ
by Leroy Brownlow. The Family of God by Batsell
Baxter and The Church of Christ by Edward Wharton.

* On the Role of Women in the public worship and leadership of the
church you should read, Women in the Church by Everett Ferguson.

* On the Holy Spirit, you should read The Holy Spirit by H. Leo Boles,
Lectures on the Holy Spirit by Gus Nichols and the Holy Spirit and the
Christian
by James D. Bales.

* On Worship and Spirituality, you need More Than a Feeling by Jimmy
Jividen.

* On Fellowship you should read Koinonia by Jimmy Jividen.

* On the Inspiration and Authority of the Bible read Jimmy Jividen’s
Inspiration and Authority of the Scriptures.

* On Miracles and Speaking in Tongues you should read Glossolalia and
Miracles: From God or Man
by Jimmy Jividen.

* On Doctrine you should read Sacred Principles on Which We Stand by
John Waddey and Systematic Theology by Rex Turner, Sr.

* For your basic set of commentaries you need to have need James
Burton Coffman’s Commentaries on the Whole Bible. In addition you
should add McGarvey’s Commentaries on Matthew and Mark and his two
volumes on Acts; H. Leo Boles Commentaries on Matthew, Luke and Acts
and Guy Woods Commentaries on John, James, Peter, John and Jude.

You will notice that all of these recommended books are by teachers of
the Church of Christ. These are books to be read, marked and kept for future reference.
No one ever has to worry about these authors denying the faith or
abandoning the church for a place in the denominational world.

“Be diligent to present thyself to God, an approved workman,
irreproachable, rightly treating the word of truth.”
( II Tim. 2:15)
